About

The mission

Forecast Delaware is the definitive portal for the First State's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean, and highway-clear for all three counties, from the Brandywine at Wilmington to Fenwick Island on the Maryland line.

Delaware is the second-smallest state and the lowest: its mean elevation is about sixty feet, less than any other, and almost all of it is Atlantic coastal plain. That is the whole forecast. Nor'easters push water into the Delaware Bay and the inland bays and the water has nowhere to go; the rain-snow line on a winter storm typically falls somewhere between Smyrna and Harrington, so the state can take a foot of snow at one end and cold rain at the other on the same day; and the Fall Line at Wilmington is the only place the ground rises enough to change the answer. Forecast Delaware is being built to tell that whole story — county by county, beach by beach.

The design language

The look borrows from the American Interstate system — the reflective paper, the green guide signs, the blue service signs, the brown recreation signs, and the red-white-and-blue route shields — set in Overpass, the typeface drawn from the Highway Gothic lettering on those signs. Delaware takes a buff paper — the second colour on the state flag — and a bay aqua accent, for the water that makes the whole state. The flag's other colour, colonial blue, is the one colour the map could not use: New Jersey already wears the network's blue directly across the river.

Metro & region sites

Delaware is covered close-up by 3 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastdelaware.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast Delaware, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

Delaware touches three states and all three are live: Forecast Maryland the length of the western line and around the whole southern boundary, Forecast Pennsylvania across the Twelve-Mile Circle at the top, and Forecast New Jersey across the Delaware River and the bay — each tinted in its own accent on the hero map and clickable from it. Forecast Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Maine, Colorado, California, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Carolinas, Alaska, Dakotas, Arizona, Missouri, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Mexico, Nevada, Kentucky, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Hawaii, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Virginia, New England, Great Plains, Canada are all part of the same system.
